Every travel location has an unspoken subculture to which the locals are intimately aware of and tourist, particularly Americans, are often times completely oblivious. Mind you, visiting the beach in Acapulco is blissfully mesmerizing regardless. But, there are a few important tips to make your beach visit all the more enjoyable.

First, location is key (as in real estate). Splurge for the front row, unobstructed cabana with the padded lounge chairs. You'll be close enough to feel the mist from the Pacific Ocean waters and you can easily take a refreshing dip in the ocean between naps. The only negative that comes with the front row rented cabana is that you will be a sitting duck for all of the venders. But, that's not so bad - you'll get a chance to interact and speak with interesting new people and hear great stories about life in Acapulco.

Second, bring your own beverages (if possible). It's very easy to quickly become dehydrated by the powerful coastal sun. You will save a ton of pesos by avoiding the 5-10x mark up for water, soft drinks and beer by the vendors or hotel beachfront waiters. An added benefit is that you don't have to worry about any malicious additives to your drinks or ice.

Third, cool off in the refreshing water, but watch the strong currents and powerful undertow. Most moderate swimmers should stay in waist deep waters as the are several step-offs and dips along the shore that can present unexpected danger. Play it safe and stay closer to shore, ideally with a friend or spouse.

Fourth, help the local economy by buying a small gift, jewelry or other item. Take a look at the hand carved and painted bowls and serving trays from this 89 year old artist.

Last (fifth), relax and leave the stress and troubles behind. The tranquil sounds of the waves and wind are intoxicating. Unplug from the cell phone, email and social media and allow your mind and spirit to completely unwind and decompress.
